Just 95 black 18-year-olds were offered a place to study at either Oxford or Cambridge last year, according to official figures.


Statistics released by Ucas show that just 45 black students were offered a place by Oxford University in 2016, while 50 were offered a place by Cambridge.


The small numbers of black students compare to 2,090 white 18-year-olds offered a place at Oxford and 2,130 at Cambridge.


Improve access The Ucas data, which breaks down individual universities’ offers by sex, ethnicity and area background, comes as higher education institutions are facing mounting pressure to widen their admissions.
