Schools Lose Billions As Staff Work For Free
BILLIONS of pounds are to be cut from education budgets despite the fact that schools are already running on the goodwill of support staff working for free, the GMB union warned yesterday.
The union, which represents school support staff, said that the future of education is threatened by government austerity — a shocking £3 billion is to be axed from the education budget by 2020.
A GMB report published yesterday suggested that bosses are relying on support staff to keep schools functioning amid cuts and tight budgets.
The survey found that nearly three-quarters of support staff are working unpaid hours, with almost 80 per cent working through their breaks.
