Up to 3,000,000 UK children risk going hungry during school holidays
As many as 3,000,000 are at risk of going hungry during the school holidays, MPs have warned.
As the end of term time approaches – so does the end of daily school dinners, putting as many as three million children at risk of hunger and malnutrition.
A cross-party group of MPs and peers have called on the Government to use £100,000 raised from the tax on sugary drinks to help councils feed hungry children when school canteens are shut.
Distressing evidence of children existing on a diet of crisps and hungry youngsters unable to take part in a football tournament because ‘their bodies simply gave up’, was heard by the parliamentarians.
The all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on hunger said Whitehall should place a duty on councils to work with schools, churches, community groups and businesses to tackle the issue.
