Up to 40 NI schools facing closure or mergers
Up to 40 schools across Northern Ireland are facing the threat of closure or mergers, following the publication of future education plans.
The Education Authority has outlined its plans for 2017 and 2018, listing the primary and post-primary schools that may be affected.
Any decisions will be subject to consultation processes first.
John Collings, Director of Education at the EA, told UTV that discussions will now take place.
“They will look at some of the challenges they (the potentially affected schools) are facing,” he said.
“Then they will be invited to come up with some creative and innovative ideas and some thinking about what the possible ways forward might be.”
Asked directly if some schools will have to close their doors, Mr Collings said: “Schools open and schools close all of the time.
